The new campaign of dynamization driven by the Island Council of La Gomera commencing with the next cruise season seeks to achieve the objectives of introducing to the tourists the culture, gastronomy, natural values and range of activities offered by the island. The initiative seeks to consolidate this tourism segment which has experienced steady growth in recent years, and which has positioned Gomeran ports as one of the preferred destinations for cruise lines and their passengers.
the number of cruisers in the last year reached 95,278 passengers
The Gomeran leader Casimiro Curbelo detailed that the new campaign planned for this year will concentrate on a program of activities for each ship visit, in which the tourist will find samples of Gomeran folklore, silbo displays and detailed information on routes and activities that can be done during their visit to the island. He also insisted on the impact that this type of tourism has on the island economy and pointed out the need to continue to promote it. “The cruise tourism that comes to La Gomera stimulates the economy through consumption in small and medium-sized commerce, but we must encourage that the spending they carry out continues to increase.”
Curbelo emphasized the growth of the number of cruisers that in the last year reached 95,278 passengers. “La Gomera closed 2016 with a record number of arrivals, not only to the port of San Sebastián de La Gomera, but also to the Vueltas in Valle Gran Rey. In total, the increase was close to 20%”, he explained before adding that forecasts point to 2017 being a good year, with 58 calls of cruise ships already confirmed.
For her part, the Counselor of Tourism, Maria Isabel Méndez, announced that the new campaign of dynamization will expand the number of activities compared to 2016. Thus, she anticipated that 50 days of dynamization are already confirmed and she does not rule out to reinforce them if the increase in the planned calls of cruise ships continues. “We work with this prediction, but from the Island Council we are ready to reach as many ships as possible”, said Méndez.
