The Island Council of La Gomera presented this week the proposals of the project to provide the island with tracks and trails that are passable for cyclists. This initiative starts with the objective of promoting active and sustainable tourism, through the practice of cycling in this type of areas.
The counselor of Tourism, María Isabel Méndez, highlighted the coordination and interest of cycling clubs, active tourism companies and the National Park to agree on those spaces that are attractive for their use and generate a pole of attraction within the offer of sports tourism. “We continue working towards a quality destination, hence we progress with proposals like this to diversify our offer and meet the growing demand for this type of tourism”, she added.
La Gomera can compete with other European territories
The project includes signage in the field, the creation of a specific leaflet on bicycle tourism and its diffusion in different promotion channels. “What we intend is to advise and guide the tourist who arrives in La Gomera and who asks us for information about the recommended routes”, said Méndez.
At the same time, she pointed out the opportunity that cyclotourism has for the local economy and sustainable tourism development. In this regard, she said that La Gomera can compete with other European territories because “we have the best spaces for the practice of this sport and in unbeatable conditions”.
Méndez stated that now the proposals resulting from the survey will be studied and priorities will be established with all the involved partners. “We want the proposed tracks – transit zones for cyclists – that come out of this project to be the most optimal in safety conditions”, she said. Regarding the promotion of the island in this matter, she announced that in the coming months La Gomera will be present at fairs and events in which this tourism product will be made known through the new material which is being created.
